A young boy watches as his father is swept out to sea, presumed drowned. Mikael and his mother must now rebuild their lives almost completely alone, on a remote island somewhere in the North Sea between Norway and Scotland. As Mikael recounts the days and weeks following the tragedy, we experience the strengthening currents of grief, guilt and blame through his young eyes, currents that shift and erode the uneasy relationship between son and mother.

This book will stay with you, whether you want it to or not, long after you’ve turned the last page. If you haven’t previously read any Dutch fiction this would be an ideal starting point, especially given that David Doherty’s translation is always excellent and often breathtakingly so.

You Have Me To Love is Jaap Robben’s first novel for adults and was the winner of the 2014 Dutch Booksellers’ Award. His second novel, Summer Brother, was longlisted for the 2021 International Booker Prize, and is again translated by David Doherty.
